Today we are going to meet a man who is a name to reckon with in the business of photography – Mr. Sameer Belvalkar. Sameer wore many hats before trying his hands in photography. Sameer is not trained in photography. He picked up a camera about 2 decades ago. Sameer has done his bachelors in chemistry and studied MBA. He started as a door-to-door salesman. He has worked with an American dot com company in Singapore for two years working in almost every domain from taxation to business development to client servicing, recruitment, headhunting, working on the systems etc. After the dot com bubble burst, he was asked to leave on a day notice. He shifted back to India and picked up a job as a graphic designer in an IT company. Sameer says it is during those days, his liking towards photography began to grow. Sameer says that we had a camera in our house which his sister used to use. But he wanted to prove to his sister that he can click better pictures and in this spirit of competition among siblings, Sameer discouraged his sister from photography. He ridiculed her to an extent that one day she gave up the camera and Sameer picked it up to prove his point that he is a better photographer. Sameer says that the camera became an extension of him. He worked very hard and understood the nuances of photography. He left his job and started full time in the business of photography. He says that a lot of people were against my leaving a job but I took a leap of faith and started doing what I was enjoying to the core. He was hired by a newspaper where he was doing reported photography, clicking anything and everything. Sameer says that he did it for a long time and shifted to feature photography which helped him to do artistic work and that’s when he went to assist a renowned photographer in Mumbai. That didn’t really last long because I had to do my own work and he wanted someone very dedicated. After a gap of a few months, the same photographer called Sameer to check if he would like to click stills for the movie Jodha Akbar, A blind person needs but two eyes and he jumped to grab the opportunity. Before he could understand anything, he was rubbing shoulders with the top names in the industry. From Hrithik Roshan to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to Ashutosh Gowariker, he worked with many big names in the industry. One thing led to the other, Sameer was shooting celebrities and magazines. He was called for My Name is Khan then he worked with Dharma Productions for We Are a Family movie. And as they say, the rest is history. Sameer has shot IPL, Pro Kabaddi League and many sports celebrities like Mary Kom, Suresh Raina, Kedar Jadhav, PV Sindhu, Sakshi Malik and many more. In this video, Sameer is talking about his journey to training in photography, nuances of photography and the biggest of all careers in photography. He says that sports photography is one such field which is not very well explored. One can name top 5 fashion photographers in the country but would be short of names if asked about ace sports photographers. Sameer gives a very apt piece of advice that if you are really interested in something, only your actions can take you to desired state and rest is procrastination. So just do it.
